Enterprise Management

Our expert Enterprise Management teams can help with:

Infrastructure Support

Demonstrated Results

  • Our infrastructure support team designed, configured and deployed a new enterprise environment for US Visit, migrating over 100TB of USV and ADIS production, test, development, and training databases. To paraphrase the US-VISIT Project Manager, “…through his technical and business knowledge of the US-Visit application databases, and his long association with IDENT, Mark brings ‘corporate knowledge’ that few others can claim.”
  • Five 9 Group played a key role in establishing the Universal Replication capability between DHS Data Centers. The ICE Project Manager wrote, “I sincerely appreciate your time and attention focusing on this task and following through from beginning to end in order to meet the scheduled deadlines.”
  • Five 9 Group personnel led the 2004 deployment of US-VISIT into its own new environment. The US-Visit application database is one of largest Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) databases in the DHS inventory.

Services and Experience

The Five 9 group has been engaged in multiple infrastructure support projects for several DHS component organizations. Our team:

  • Designed, configured and deployed upgraded environments in support of US VISIT, ADIS and ENFORCE production application databases, and the first ICE Integrated Decision Support (IIDS) data warehouse project
  • Maintained, managed and upgraded Enterprise Server RDBMS’s and OS’s across hundreds of DHS agency platforms and databases
  • Developed and implemented backup and recovery methodologies and procedures for enterprise mission-critical Very Large Databases (VLDB)

Data Center Migration and Consolidation

Demonstrated Results

  • Other significant migrations included data migration of the:
  • ICE ENFORCE application database, upgrading the RDBMS, and converting from Pyramid to Digital Equipment to AIX
  • USCIS NFTS application between datacenters, while changing platforms from AIX to Sun
  • USCIS CLAIMS4 application database across three datacenters, where each move represented a change in hardware, upgrading/updating databases, and application code releases
  • PAS application and print services from an ICE IDMS/ROPES/CICS environment to USCIS
  • Five 9 Group team members played a critical role in the migration and conversion of the Deportable Alien Control System (DACS) data from IDMS mainframe hosting to the open systems EARM application, a subset of the ENFORCE application and database family.

Services and Experience

Five 9 Group team members have extensive experience in migration and consolidation of data centers, including strategic planning, execution and follow-on support. The Five 9 Group led several major successful data center migration efforts for DHS agencies covering multiple major systems such as CLAIMS 4, EID, NFTS, ADIS and US-VISIT, migrating across different platforms, operating systems, database versions and locations.

Capacity Planning

Demonstrated Results

  • Five 9 Group played a key role in providing the capacity planning needed for US-Visit growth. Based on metrics derived from system monitoring, we were able to analyze data including storage growth, CPU utilization, and user activity. Based on this analysis, Five 9 Group was able to recommend future system resource requirements.

Services and Experience

Managing your infrastructure physical resources on a real-time basis is critical. Database server CPU and memory management, SAN performance and storage capacity planning are just a few of the areas where our dedicated and knowledgeable professionals will ensure your applications are performing as required. Five 9 Group works closely with disparate application developers, maintains an active dialogue with technology providers, and ensures that anticipated growth is in the forefront of our capacity planning approach. Some of these capacity planning activities include:

  • Short- and long-term trend analysis to predict when the system load will exceed the capacity or the established margin of safety
  • Modeling and load testing to simulate systems workload to identify system thresholds and recommend configuration changes as required
  • Identifying opportunities to employ virtualization technologies to leverage CPU, memory and storage to enhance performance, and minimize associated software and hardware costs

24 x 7 Enterprise Monitoring

Demonstrated Results

  • Lacking effective database and server monitoring tools, the INS/ICE production control team used to receive as many as 200 calls per week. Five 9 Group developed and deployed an effective monitoring application which reports database and server problems directly to the on-call technician, allowing triage, troubleshooting and correction – most often before the end-user is even aware of an issue. This effort reduced trouble calls to less than five per week

Services and Experience

Proactive management of your infrastructure, applications and databases requires effective enterprise monitoring and notification systems. Responding to, and correcting problems before your end-users know a problem exists is a defining factor of “five nines” of service delivery.

Our Five 9 Group Enterprise Monitoring Team has developed and deployed configurable automated 24/7 monitoring utilities to ensure your enterprise databases and servers remain available to your end-users. We are proficient with and employ many of the major COTS monitoring solutions in the environments we manage. These include BigBrother, BMC, Quest, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and others that are specifically tailored to your needs
